A caller impolitely asked why NASA deserved trillions of tax dollars a year from citizens to fund projects that would never benefit them (the taxpayers) directly. To my shock and amazement the head of NASA, after trying to placate the caller with some generic platitudes, responded: "because the government would just waste it on something else."

I think that applies for any government program, whether the NEA or NASA. Even if the NEA costs the taxpayer "only the price of a postage stamp a year" the fact of the matter is that you are never going to get it back anyway. Therefore, the message of the NEA should be: shut-up and get some "kultcha" you ignorant taxpayer.

The truly interesting aspect of your argument is that if you substituted "NSF" for "NEA" it still works. Would political science actually fall apart without government funding? Would great thoughts, or statisitcs, about the functioning of governments (or at least those branches with a large enough N, which in our case would be half of one branch)cease without the government to nurture them? Was the article you imprinted with your pirate logo funded be a government grant? I'd put odds on that one!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7464708.post-1104691126694363532005-01-02T13:38:00.000-05:002005-01-02T13:38:00.000-05:00Why are you conflating liberalism with its antithe...Why are you conflating liberalism with its antithesis and archenemy - communism? It is like saying that conservatives are essentially fascists, and libertarians essentially anarchists.

Also, it does not matter who is paying for it, the artist is going to create what (s)he wants, what inspiration brings, and what one's training and talent allow. Nobody's telling artists what to do (although in some countries they are told what NOT to do, like chimp-Bush collages or bare-breasted statues....).

If the Feds invested more into art education (instead of NCLB), there would be a greater hunger for and appreciation of art, thus more artists would be able to make a living as artists, instead of waiting tables. What about the "art" that millions of middle class Americans obsess over--professional and college athletics? How many cities are building stadiums for fear that "their" team will abandon them? How many universities, 90%+ with athletic programs that LOSE money, waste valuable resources on athletic facilities and scholarships for the few?

Some old wannabe Canadian, soon to marry his friend's sister's cousin in West Virginia.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7464708.post-1104532391686608012004-12-31T17:33:00.000-05:002004-12-31T17:33:00.000-05:00"Jan. 1,2005"???
