I was moved to song. To the tune of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” Battle Hymn of GDP Mine eyes have seen the measure of the wealth a nation makes, Tally all the goods and services that people undertake; It adds consumption, exports, and investments we create— To track our rising brawn… CHORUS Glory, glory, halleluiah! Glory, glory, halleluiah! Glory, glory, halleluiah! GDP marches on! We’ve counted household spending and the wages workers earn, We’ve measured public outlays and the factories that churn; But though the number’s mighty, there is much it can’t discern— It can’t tell right from wrong… Chorus Some hail it as our compass, as the sign of growing might, Some warn it hides pollution in its glow of summing light; It weighs the market’s motion, but it leaves out human sight— What makes a life belong… Chorus So use it as a window, not the story whole and true; A lens to watch an engine, not a measure of virtue; A number helps us navigate, but we choose how to view— The world we build upon… Chorus Still, when all is said and done, it measures something real, Not like those silly “measures” that just ask how people feel. ‘Cause those notions of utility are slip’ry as an eel! GDP’s the best we’ve got! Chorus
