Open Marriage

B PhD has a nice piece on "open marriage."

Best line: If you have slept with n people, then anyone who has slept with n+1 people is a slut. Our own experiences form the outer boundary of what is morally acceptable.

Amazingly perceptive remark. And it transfers to other areas. We are all immigrants, in the U.S. Even the "native Americans came here just 8 or 10 thousand years ago. But somehow, the arrival of one's own particular ancestors seems to have perfected the U.S. Before my people came: America sucked. After they came: America was perfect, and all additional immigration should be outlawed.

The KPC view--on marriage, let people do what they want. Rules=tyranny.

On immigration--let people live where they want. More people=better country.

  1. The world is a small place. Jenny Block, author of the recent book Open and a current high-profile advocate of open marriages, was a grade school classmate of mine. Her father was the local rabbi.

Let's Just Get the Government out of the Marriage Business.

  3. Come on Mike, rules=tyranny? Isn't this a stereotype of a libertarian, here? So, rules that outlaw murder, rape, driving on the opposite side of the road into oncoming traffic, fraud, violations of property rights in general = tyranny? Please. And btw, I'm a libertarian.

  4. More charitably, after a second read, perhaps you were narrowing it to "rules about marriage = tyranny." If so, that doesn't sound so bad.

  5. You're a libertarian that doesn't have the first damn clue what he's talking about.

Laws and legislation, dude. Check 'em out.

  6. And the last thing we need is rules against commercial entities lying about their products and ripping us off:

Damn government trying to stop this. After all, we'll all just find out about their lying and sue them.

  7. The trouble with open marriages is that most people who have them fail to inform their spouses.

  8. I think we know enough about he world to know that all immigrants are not created equal, and that have some criteria is better than not having any. For example, it's better to have smart and educated people come here than dumb and illiterate.

  10. Wealth is the same way. Ask someone who is rich and they will inevitably tell you its that guy that makes 20% more than he does.

  11. I agree with Zimaroll re: less people = better country. Free trade amongst one person countries sounds pretty ideal.

But then who would clean my toilet?

  13. Great topic!
Yeah right writing about their open marriage experience is kinda disgusting. I am not in favor of open marriage because I want a man who is a one woman guy.
