As someone who knows virtually nothing about architecture or design, I like #2. Since a potential future buyer will also likely know nothing of these topics, my opinion should hold significant weight when considering resale value. ;)
The larger and more prominent use of white creates a greater level of contrast. It makes the entrance way much more inviting. The first (from this rendering) is much to cave-like.
The windows on the side of the house are also much nicer. The, piano window, especially is a nice touch which I presume would be in the living room. It is easy to place furniture with. Additionally the back window/pillar provide some nice architectural detail.
The design reminds me of an old joke. An American tourist was driving around the West of Ireland but he lost. He stopped the car to ask a local for directions. The local said, "Well, wouldn't start from here..."
My votes for #2 as well. Nothing hugely wrong with #1 -- it'll always look okay as long as you keep up the maintenance -- but it's boring. It looks like a small business building -- a place to buy plumbing supplies, for example. #2 catches the eye; it isn't so ordinary.
#2. Although I've had a couple, I hate houses where the garage dominates the front. It says "a car and its peoples live here". The garage is more subdued in #2 - at least from this angle. Definitely curious about what is going on with that rear corner pillar in #2 as well -looks more interesting. When I saw #1 the other day I thought "that's a home? not a dentist office?"

#1 looks like the back entrance to my local Lowe's. Not good. #2 is slightly less boxy. Better.

ReplyDeleteI like option #2, but be prepared to aim your garden hose at the top of the white rectangle to clean in periodically.

#2 is good. it's all soffit and stucco - you can change it in a couple weekends if you grow tired of it.

ReplyDeleteI'd want to know the orientation. Which is the north side? In the winter snow will stick on the north side and can get icy under traffic.
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming it is all stucco. #2 looks cooler, but will require more maintenance. #1 is a more standard look.
Orientation would be my question also. I prefer #1. Will all that light color in #2 be reflecting sunlight onto the front door?
