Ron Artest explains his shoe toss
That, of course, was awesome.
Even more awesome though is Ron-Ron's explanation of what happened:
“Well what happened was…obviously I didn’t know his shoe would come off that’s the first thing conservative reporters. I didn’t know his shoe was gonna come off. I don’t speak to his feet so I don’t know what his feet are thinking, I don’t know what his toes are thinking, I don’t know what he’s thinking. Then his shoe comes off and I’m like okay a shoe is not supposed to be on the basketball court without somebody standing inside of it. So I said alright, I’m just gonna buy me some time. I really didn’t know whose shoe it was, but I said it has to be one of the player’s shoe. As soon as I toss it off the court, not throw into the stands which some people said, it’ll buy me some time. What happens is I come back down, Trevor is trying to put his shoe on and I politely hit a three in his face.”
Man oh man, "I don't know what his toes are thinking"?? Thanks Ron!

Everybody will be kung-fu fighting
According to the BBC:
Kung fu primarily appeals to Madagascar's middle class youth of both sexes, with some students beginning as young as four. But it also has a following in the older sections of society.
"Ministers, doctors, lawyers, and especially priests all practise kung fu," explains Charles Andriamihaja, the president of the AAKUFUMA Kung Fu Society of Madagascar.
The discipline hit the island in the 1970s and was a factor in protests against the authoritarian rule of President Ratsiraka, who banned its practice.
Current President Ravalomanana is a whole other story though. He has his own voluntary kung-fu security detail (at least he did in 2002). Here's how one local practitioner describes his prez:
"Ravalomanana reflects the ideology of the kung fu and that is why we must protect him,"
Ellie Rajaonarison (a Malagasy poet) breaks it down for us:
"The kung fu movement was about protecting people,"
"Kung fu fighters today occupy something of a mystical space in the Madagascan psyche because of their strength and power and for what they stood up for during the 1980s."
Thank goodness me and Mrs. Angus practiced Tae Kwon Do for a couple years. We'll be aiight.Friday, April 11, 2008
Lost, but not forgotten
The Bolivians are mad because Chile is impersonating them on land that used to be theirs. The Chileans are mad because the movie is dressing up people as Bolivians and having them run around acting like this part of Chile is actually Bolivia.
I am not making this up. Read more about it here.
On a related note, Mrs. Angus recently had a Bolivian student in one of her classes who had served in their military. He claimed that when Bolivian soldiers put bullets in their guns (not a real modern arsenal there I guess) they chant, "un Chileno, dos Chilenos......" as each one goes in.

Cleveland nights
But holy crap, people, have you seen the stuff coming out of his mouth in Ohio? Isn't it astonishing? Either it's simply wink-wink posturing, in which case how's he a break from business as usual? or he means it which makes you wonder what Austan Goolsbee's been smoking.
He is 100% committed to re-negotiating or pulling out of NAFTA? The vehemence of the rhetoric is so far out of line with the reality of the situation, that it must be a farce, but can it be? Obama the Cynic? He's even channelling his inner Ricky Bobby, loudly proclaiming "I pray to Jesus every night".
Hillary is even funnier of course, but I already expected that and have her pegged. It's pure cynicial pandering on her part. She knows good and well that NAFTA hasn't hurt the US and she probably even knows that the top two destinations for Ohio's exports are Mexico and Canada.

Behold the power of.... CHUCK??

The actor who kicked copious butt on "Walker, Texas Ranger" is now attempting to bench press a presidential candidate from obscurity to front-runner with his endorsement of Mike Huckabee. Searches on Norris are up 10% over the past week, but more importantly, lookups on "mike huckabee chuck norris" are up a whopping 457%.
As for Huckabee, the GOP candidate has seen his searches double over the past week. Is it the Norris effect? We looked at searches on two prominent endorsements on the Democratic side to see how celeb buzz is affecting candidates.
Oprah Winfrey has thrown her behemoth buzz behind Barack Obama. We know that Oprah is the largest offline influencer of buzz. Her support has lifted searches on books, cars, and even Dr. Oz. She's hitting the campaign trail with Obama and searches on the senator from Illinois are up 24% this week. Queries on the daytime queen are up 10% as pollsters and pundits watch to see if her powers extend to the political realm.
Singer Barbra Streisand cast her lot with Hillary Clinton and backed the New York senator in her presidential bid. Searches on Babs jumped 31% and Clinton searches sang a happy tune, up 38% this week.
But when it comes to political muscle thus far, no celeb endorsement can measure up to the power of Chuck. His backing of Huckabee helped lift the former governor of Arkansas past his more prominent rivals in buzz.
Oh yeah, and thanks to Chuck, Huck is now polling at #1 in the torture party's (John McCain is honorably excluded from that last statement) Iowa primary race.
