Perhaps I missed some subtleties here, but what I heard was that to win NC Obama has to overcome (a) the fact that his voting record would not be all that consistent with a majority of NC voters and (b) his race. What, exactly, is the "value subtracted" by race in this analysis? As far as I can tell, Prof. Haynie's argument is that there's a bunch of left-wing racists in your neck of the woods. I suppose that's quite possible, but it's kind of a strange argument.
