Fight the Power!
I have a great colleague (just got tenure), Dr. Bahar Leventoğlu.
It turns out she has been fighting a landmark court case in Turkey, for the legal right to keep and use her own name (her "maiden" name in patriarchal language) after getting married.
And she won! GoodONya, ma'am!
(Some background and other details on the case here)

Frampton comes full circle
Ex-UNC prof Paul Frampton has now been convicted of drug running in Argentina and sentenced to 4 years, 8 months.
Earlier KPC coverage of this story can be found here.
He claims he was scammed by a babe. But the prosecution says he texted said babe gems like: "I'm worried about the sniffer dogs".
Confirming my previous allegation that Frampton's drug of choice is LSD, he hopes to serve his time in a friend's apartment.
That's not how they roll, homie.

The cure is worse than the disease
What do you do when you find 10 human heads? Send 12 policemen to look for the bodies.
What do you do when those 12 policemen are murdered?.............
Legalize drugs?
It is amazing what damage the US anti-drug policy is having in other countries. According to the linked article, over 47,000 people have died in drug violence in Mexico during the sexenio of Felipe Calderon.
Our drug laws are responsible for a horrible toll of carnage and disfunction in Latin America.

Movin' on up
Congratulations to the Mexican drug cartels, who've had a very good 2010. They now allegedly control 75% of neighboring Guatemala (with the deployment of only 800 operatives), and have muscled out the Colombians for the European cocaine distribution routes.
KPC is officially "long" on Mexican drug lords for 2011.
Hat tip to Boz and Wikileaks.
