Monday's Child

1.  What does your school smell like?  (Remember, NC State is a vet school.  I'm just sayin'...).  Presumably, UNC has a "wine and cheese" kind of thing.

2.  Come the revolution, you WILL like Obamacare.  Interesting that this woman means, by "moving forward," that other people give her more money.  And if she has to pay more money, that's moving backward.  I can see that in a career--you move forward, you get a raise--but not so much as a definition of progress in public policy.

3.  Elections have consequences, and I won.  But if YOU win, we'll change the rules.  That sort of election should NOT have consequences.

4.  I'm a fan of bike lanes.  But the point should be to foster bike travel at low cost, not to make auto travel prohibitively expensive.  This will make it very difficult for businesses to operate.

5.  This can't be right....can it?

More after the jump....

6.  Sarvis took AT LEAST as many votes from McAuliffe as from Cuccinelli.

7.  American cities foreign government warn their citizens about.

8.  Public relations problem?  No problem!  Just go on Twitter.  Okay, no.

9.  The Goldman Sachs guide to being a man.  On the very first entry:  Phone call for Aaron King.

10.  Democrats get extremely wealthy taking money from the state, and then criticize people who actually earn a living.  Not sure how they can get their heads around that.

11.  Interesting, but disturbing, news that Guatemalans are confused about electricity. (In Spanish).

12.  Nice piece by my friend Prof. Bellemare (rap name:  Markie-Bell) on GMO.  Best arguments on both sides.

13.  Accounting for the Great Divergence.  I'm still a fan of institutional arguments, myself.

14.  In search of libertarians in America...

15.  Been spendin' most of their lives...livin' in a plunderer's paradise. You can really only do this once.  It's pretty much what happened in Chile in 1973 when Allende decided it was time to give everything away. (By 1973, 1/3 of all groceries and theaters were taken over by the state, and they were working to take them all).  Then, bad stuff.

16.  Ken at Popehat is my kind of guy.  Not because he's nice (he isn't) or alway right (he certainly isn't).  But because he finds stuff like this and writes about it.  I have not heard about this anywhere else.

17.  As has often been mentioned in this space, the problem with environmentalism is not a lack of self-importance and smugness.  They have that in abundance.  The problem is that environmentalists are led by their self-importance and smugness to do things that actually harm what they claim to want to save.

18.  Apparently it's a good thing to think of others, and be charitable, over the holidays.  Unless you have in mind the deep religious meaning of the holiday.  In that case, charity is blackmail.  Wait...what?  If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanist eat?  Children, apparently.

19.  Interesting piece on "finance cynicism."

Colorado Woman Who Championed Obamacare Loses Insurance Plan, CBS4 Denver, 11/08/2013

‘Cathy Wagner says she isn’t political and has never written a lawmaker, much less the president, but with Obamacare she felt compelled.

“I really just wanted him to know … I was so hopeful that this plan was going to move us forward, but in fact I think it’s moving us backward,” Wagner said.’

Translation: she “championed Obamacare” which is a political answer to an economic question yet she isn’t political. Huh?

‘ “This is yet the most recent issue,” said U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colorado.
DeGette sits on the committee that oversees Obamacare. She insists the Wagners are the exception, not the rule.

“As we work through all of this I think that a year from now people overall are going to be very, very happy with the way the Affordable Care Act is working,” DeGette said.’

Translation: it will be different next time, like it wasn’t last time and will not be the next time. Results are so much BS, intentions are everything.

‘But Wagner isn’t convinced. For the first time she’s considering going without health insurance.

“The whole plan was to get everyone enrolled so there’s a larger risk pool and our costs go down,” she said. “Wow, not at all what we’re seeing.’

Translation: the law of large numbers is the only component in insurance theory and it always drives price down. Solomon L. Huebner not-be-us.

In VA, there are no parties when you register to vote. The numbers are most likely self identified. And, Educated PEOPLE VOTE LIBERTARIAN!! That surprises ME anyway...

From the Goldman Sachs link:

"If you believe in evolution, you should know something about how it works."

This is excellent advice, or at least it confirms that others share one of my pet peeves.

Sarvis was a libertarian? Yes, he had a Libertarian Party label, but he didn't seem very libertarian to me.
