If Doctors Were Outlawed, Only Criminals Would Have Doctors

STATISTICS TO PONDER
(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.

(Calculation) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171
Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Now think about this: Guns:
(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million..)

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.

(Calculation) The number of accidental deaths
per gun owner is .000188; Statistics courtesy of FBI
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.
We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Out of concern for the public at large, I withheld the statistics on
lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention...

(Nod to CC, who knows from doctors)

Maybe I'm just a biased medical student, but I wouldn't be so quick to assume those statistics are correct. Besides, it doesn't at all mention the distribution. Doctors in the ICU may "kill" many patients a year, because it is extremely difficult NOT to cause infection in a patient who already has every organ shutting down. Doctors who try to prevent (at the margins) some deaths in already fatal situations, might account for the skew of the mean. This is a difficult statistic to capture, because there is no real "control." Many of those people would have died within hours, and the doctor's intervention was just an attempt to perhaps prevent the otherwise inevitable.

Of course, it goes without saying that cars, cigarettes, contact sports, first aid, pharmaceutical companies, and fire should be banned as well.

Adina thinks stats on accidental deaths due to doctors' errors "is a difficult statistic to capture, because there is no real 'control.'"

Hmmm... what would be the 'control' on the accidental gun death statistic? Guns are such a charged political issue that it's easy to believe some of the deaths being reported that way are from sitations where the gun was only peripherally involved.

Dude:

This is pretty one-sided (though funny) view of things. You cannot just compare stats for "accidental deaths" and ignore "non-accidental deaths" caused by guns vs doctors. Don't forget to add all the non-accidental deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan while you are at it.

On the case of Lawyers, accidental and non-accidental are the same thing - I guess
